California's RN workforce is profiled through various data sources, including the Bureau of Labor Statistics,Community Population Survey, and the Survey of Registered Nurses, a stratified sample survey of 10,000 licensed CA registered nurses conducted under the guidance of the The Board of Registered Nursing (BRN).
The 2012 Survey of Registered Nurses represents the eighth in a series of surveys designed to describe licensed registered nurses in California and to examine changes over time. Surveys have been conducted in 1990, 1993, 1997, 2004, 2006, 2008, and 2010. Since 2006,the BRN has contracted with the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF) to conduct the survey on a bienniel - every two year - schedule. UCSF presents the Board of Registered Nursing with a comprehensive report of the survey results and makes survey results accessible to the public.
